The uphill climb of weight loss is difficult no matter how you go about it. You have to work to lose weight. That work may include giving up the foods that you love or sacrificing hours at the gym. But some diet plans are more effective than others. The question for most people is not how to lose weight fast but is rather how to lose weight period.
In order to construct a diet plan you need to determine why you gained weight in the first place. First look at what you are eating. Does your day begin with a caramel Frappuccino and muffin and end with a pizza and potato chips? Your diet problems do not even need to be that extreme. Most of the calories Americans consume are through beverages. They start with sugary coffee drinks, progress onto soft drinks, and end with alcohol. Just because they are liquids does not mean they are not high in calories. One iced coffee can be as much as two hundred calories. Soda pop adds on at least two hundred more. And alcohol tips the scales all on its own.
So rather than eating a two thousand-calorie diet, you are adding on eight hundred or more unnecessary calories that are mostly comprised of sugar. For some of us, eating healthy will always seem like some kind of diet. And to be on a perpetual diet is undesirable to anybody. But there are some simple steps that you can take that are not as hard as you may think.
First of all, eat only when you are actually hungry. We eat out of sorrow, out of boredom, and for various other reasons. If you stop to think about it, you are taking in quite a few excess and non essential calories. Your body tells you when it needs food, and outside of that, you do not actually need to eat extra food. This will actually automatically restrict your caloric intake.
Second, use spices. There was a study recently that used what they called “tastants.” Essentially, they have proven that when you have taste to your food, as simple as salt and as fattening as ranch, your body is more likely to realize that it is full. If you use certain spices such as salt, onions, and curry, they are often calorie free, and they make you less likely to overeat.
Third, limit your salt intake. While it can of course help you to eat less because it is a tastant technically speaking, the sodium found in salt can actually hold onto water and make you bloated and uncomfortable, not to mention making you gain a fair amount of weight.
Fourth, eat a little more protein. You don’t have to go on an all protein diet, nor do you have to go out and buy protein shakes. But something as simple as adding an egg in the morning could help you to eat less during the day, and it has been shown to improve the fat burning ability of those who eat more of it.
And finally, take a little time for entertainment. Obviously, laughing can burn more excess calories, and they have found that laughing for just 15 minutes a day works the abs and facial muscles. Thoughtful Eating
With all the focus on what to eat—sufficient nutrients, low-calorie, low-fat—it’s easy to forget about one important eating factor: how we eat. In our often too-hurried lives, we forget that eating isn’t just about shoveling in enough calories so that we can get through the day. Nor is it about depriving ourselves and consuming just enough to keep slim. Eating is a joyous occasion. Foods offer delicious flavors, mouth-watering aromas, and pleasing textures—all of which are tied to emotions. Satiety—the feeling of fullness—is a vital, life-affirming feeling.
First, slow down. Avoid rushing through meals. Gulping down foods isn’t good for the digestive system. Plus, chewing slowly aids feeling full without eating as much. For one thing, when you munch in a hurry without thinking, it’s easy to eat too much before you even realize it.
But thoughtful eating is about more than just pace. Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh writes about mindful eating. He says that, before each meal, we should contemplate what we are about to consume. Look at the orange on the plate, he suggests, and see in it the seed that grew into the tree that flowered into the fruit. Be grateful for the earth that cradled the seed, the sun that provided the energy to grow and photosynthesize, the rain that watered the thirsty plant, and the seasons the little tree endured.
Wholesome living and eating is about so much more than just food itself. Life is about enjoyment. Don’t forget to let eating be a part of that joy.

This spring, my family and I decided to work together to improve each of our eating habits. Feeling Great in eight was the name of our game. For eight weeks, we kept track of everything we consumed—and I do mean everything. For healthy foods, we gained points and for those not-so-nutritious, but oh-so-delicious diversions, we lost them. We each forked up fifteen bucks, and the person with the most points got the dough.
The details of the game can be individualized depending on your individual needs. For example, if everyone is focused on losing weight, you’ll want the negative points for indulging in sugary sweets to be rather hefty, while giving a healthy dose of points for selecting low-fat, low-calorie options. A good way to base the point system is to look at a round diet. This means allotting points for each food group. For each day, you’ll get ten points each for eating three servings of veggies, three servings of fruit, two servings of milk products, and three servings of complete proteins. Allot ten points for drinking sixty ounces of water in a day, as hydration is an important part of a healthy diet. Then deduct ten points for each serving of additional, unnecessary calories. The game can be as simple as that. Or you can get as creative as you want. It’s a good idea to add points for exercise, as physical activity is as important as good nutrients. Add ten points for each continuous fifteen minutes of physical exertion a day. You may want to add bonus points for participating in a mind-beneficial activity like reading, meditating, or cross-word puzzling. Switch it up and have weekly winners of small prizes, so no one feels like they have no chance if someone’s pulling out ahead.
This is a great way to learn about nutrition together and help your family or friends get in shape. Just make sure to be open-minded and focus on your individual gains rather than worrying are doing. Remember, it’s all in good fun. Neither the money nor the win is the true benefit. Getting healthier is.

Next time you visit your favorite supermarket, take a gander down the aisle and count how many shelves are dedicated to foods that come in boxes or bags. These days, a whole lot of these processed foods are available. All too often, we end up getting way too many of our calories among the prepackaged varieties. Generally, these foods have more salt, less nutrients per calorie, and more additives. Anyone who follows nutrition trends knows dieticians say to avoid these foods as much as possible.
But sometimes, eating bagged or boxed food is unavoidable. That’s all that’s available. You just plain don’t have time. Whatever the reason, when you do eat prepackaged items, do away with the bag or box first. In other words, place what you’re about to eat on a plate. When you eat out of the bag or box, it’s easy to keep eating without having any idea how many pretzels, chips, or crackers you’ve taken down. If you’re really hungry, you might just find yourself at the end of the bag when you only meant to have a quick snack to get you by. Avoid eating more than you intended to eat by deciding ahead of time what your allotted serving size will be and serving yourself up only that amount.

I recently read an article on healthy eating that suggested cutting out dinner by candlelight. The reason? Eating with the lights low leads to overeating because when you can’t see (or more accurately, when whoever you’re eating with can’t see) what’s going on, you’re less self-conscious. Thus you not only eat more, you don’t lighten up when it comes to higher-calorie items. I say pshaw!
Eating healthy, nutrient dense foods is important. But, when it comes to overall health, eating right doesn’t trump feeling emotionally well. While wholesome eating does play a role in emotional well-being, camaraderie and bonding, as well as romance, are irreplaceable components of overall health. There’s nothing quite so stress-relieving in just the same way as sitting down to a relaxing, delicious meal with people you share a special bond with.
Nor can anything match gazing into the candlelit eyes of someone you love. Special dinners like these can be the patches that mend tears in the relationships that are most important to you. Feeling good about your relationships means feeling good about yourself, which translates to better eating and healthier lifestyle choices in your daily life.
All in all, I say chalk doing away with dimly lit dinners up to a change you shouldn’t make. After all, diet isn’t everything. My recommendation? Just the opposite: Put fresh flowers in a vase, pull out the cloth napkins and those special-occasion candle holders, and put something delicious in the oven. Call up some good friends or a loved one and let the soft lights and lovely aromas wash your cares away. Why? Because it’s Monday.
